UXD 60001: Principles & Concepts
Reflective Journaling Week 5
Wow! What did not stick with me from this week. There are a lot of things that I enjoyed about our fifth module on Design Principles & Concepts. Specifically we focused on Organization, Layout, and Composition. All things that I love to evaluate about designs. What was refreshing this week was revisiting the official theories, their names, and those things that I would say are more second nature to me with 20 years in the field.
I had forgotten the golden ratio and its grounding in so much of what is in nature, design, art, and all around us. To have the design principles named again for me also was a nice refresher. Again I may critique a piece in my day job, but not come back to those terms. I may be more informal with my language, so to go back to the basics and read/hear about Gestalt, visual hierarchy, balance, rhythm, scale, figure/ground, framing, and grids that are all so important to the success of a design was truly enjoyable.
The second piece that I have enjoyed and want to go back and read more are the entries of my classmates on their effective and ineffective design pieces. I went to what was comfortable and critiqued print advertisements, but it is educational for me to read those critiques of user interface as that is a design space that is not as comfortable for me.
